Over ten years ago work began to establish the first Muslim cemetery in the Nation’s Capital.
Over the years there have been presentations and fundraising events to promote and raise funds for the project. It has been a challenge not only to find an appropriate plot of land for the cemetery but also to raise sufficient funds to complete the project.
There are a wide range of institutions now in the Nations Capital. However, after 100 years of Muslim presence in the Ottawa area, there is finally an opportunity to have a Muslim cemetery that is owned and operated by the Muslim community and which will meet the unique needs of the community.
The land is acquired, the license to operate obtained, and work has begun to construct a road on the property.
The only challenge remaining before internment can begin in the spring of 2010 is to raise sufficient funds to complete the road and to do the landscaping on a section of the land. The budget to meet the objective of beginning operation in the spring of 2010 is $600,000.
The project team is appealing to Muslim organizations and community members to help realize the vision of establishing a Muslim cemetery. If the community pre-orders 1000 plots, there will be sufficient funds to finance the entire development cost of the cemetery. At the same time community members will have their plot(s) which can be transferred to another person if they do not need the plot(s) for their own use.
The community is growing and there are many projects in progress to serve the local Muslim community. These projects have placed many demands on members of the community to provide financial support. However, we are confident that we can do this together, Inshaa Allah.
We are appealing to you to encourage others to support the project through donations and/or pre-ordering of plots.
